Dr. Deanna Joseph
Georgia State University 

Dr. Deanna Joseph is Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the Georgia State University School of Music where she conducts the University Singers and leads the master’s program in choral conducting. In 2015, she was the recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award at Georgia State, where she was selected out of a pool of over 800 faculty.

Under Dr. Joseph’s baton the Georgia State University Singers have been invited to perform at two conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. In May of 2013, the University Singers competed in La Florilège Vocal de Tourswhere they placed second overall in the mixed choir category and Dr. Joseph was honored with the Prix du chef de choer (conducting prize). Additional honors from 2013 include an invited performance at the Georgia Music Educator’s Association annual conference and the North American premiere of David Bintley’s Carmina Burana with the Atlanta Ballet. The choir’s new professional recording, Evening Hymn (Gothic Records), is available starting in the fall of 2015 through both compact disk and on iTunes.

Dr. Joseph is an active guest conductor and clinician and has conducted all-
state and honor choirs in more than eleven states. She is a frequent conductor of choral-orchestral repertoire, and has led performances of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Beethoven Mass in C, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation and Lord Nelson Mass, Schubert’s Mass in A-flat and Bruckner’s Mass in D Minor.

Dr. Joseph’s research in the area of 19th century choral-orchestral performance-practice has led to invited presentations on the topic at several division conferences of the American Choral Director’s Association and at the national convention for the National Collegiate Choral Organization. In October of 2012 she was selected as one of 25 presenters from ten countries to speak at the Lund Choral Festival in Sweden.

​Prior to her appointment at Georgia State University, Dr. Joseph served on the faculties at Smith College, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

Dr. Joseph holds conducting degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where she was awarded the Walter Hagen Conducting Prize. She is the founder and artistic director of the Atlanta Summer Conducting Institute (ASCI), a weeklong masterclass that draws conductors from all across the country and takes place annually during June.

Dr. Laura Artesani
UMaine School of Performing Arts

Dr. Laura Artesani is an Associate Professor in the School of Performing Arts at the University of Maine, where she teaches music education and music history courses and supervises student teachers.  She serves as piano accompanist for the University Singers, and performs frequently in faculty and student recitals.  She is the faculty advisor for the UMaine Collegiate Chapter of NAfME, and is a member of the Executive Board of the Maine Music Educators Association.
Dr. Artesani graduated summa cum laude from Barrington College in Rhode Island with a B.M. in Music Education, and received a M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Maine.   She earned a D.M.A. in Piano Performance from West Virginia University, where she was the recipient of the Swiger Teaching Fellowship for four years.  She has completed Level I-III of Orff Schulwerk Training, and is the recipient of a research grant from the American Orff Schulwerk Association.  Articles that Dr. Artesani has written or co-authored have appeared in the Journal for Music Teacher Education, The Orff Echo and General Music Today.
In addition to her duties at the University of Maine, Dr. Artesani is also the organist/pianist at the Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono.  She has taught at the Lincoln School in Providence, RI; North Orrington and Center Drive schools in Orrington, ME; and the Stillwater Montessori School in Stillwater, ME.

Dr. Michele Kaschub
University of Southern Maine School of Music

Dr. Michele Kaschub serves as Professor of Music and Coordinator of Music Teacher Education at the University of Southern Maine School of Music.  Her teaching responsibilities include courses in music education philosophy, research and curriculum as well as PreK-12 choral/vocal methods and composition methods.  Publications include articles in a variety of national and international journals and chapters in several books, while clinics, papers and workshops have been presented at multiple state, national, and international conferences.  In 2007 she launched “Composing Together” – the first certificate of advanced study program in the United States focused on preparing teachers to lead composition in PreK-12 settings. In 2009 she coauthored Minds on Music: Composition for Creative and Critical Thinking (Rowman & Littlefield) with Janice Smith.  The text presents both theory and guidelines to help PreK-12 teachers develop and deliver composition curriculum. Her most recent writing project, co-edited with Janice Smith, is Composing Our Future (Oxford 2012), a text for music teacher educators addressing the need for, and means for implementing, composition pedagogy in undergraduate and graduate music education programs. In addition to her work with music teacher education and composition, Michele also serves as the Artistic Director/Conductor for the Concert Choir of The Boy Singers of Maine and as Immediate Past-President of the Maine Music Educators Association.

Bio
Nancy Gunn was born in New York and earned a Masters in Composition from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D in Composition from the CUNY Graduate Center in New York.  Her works have been performed by the New York Festival of Song, the Colorado Symphony, and the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, among others, and have received numerous awards, including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the ASCAP Foundation, Meet the Composer,  the Maine Humanities Council, and the Aspen Music Festival.   Nancy is on the faculty of Southern Maine Community College, where she teaches world music, music history, and music theory.  About At Temple Stream:
At Temple Stream, for treble choir, is a setting of a poem by Kristen Case, a poet and Professor of English at the University of Maine at Farmington. Kristen lives with her husband and two children in Temple, Maine.   Her recent poetry collection, LIttle Arias, won the Maine Literary Award in poetry in 2016.  She teaches classes in American literature, environmental writing, and the intersection of literature and philosophy at UMF.  
Kristen writes about the poem:   “At Temple Stream is part of a series of poems I wrote after we’d lived in Temple a little less than a year and were just getting to know the place. I used to go for these long walks along the Temple Stream that spring, and I was struck by both the beauty and the violence of the thaw: great slabs of ice crashing into one another.  The way this force was breaking up what had felt so solid and immovable made an impression on me; I wanted so much to describe it, just as it was, to get it right . . . The poem is also about recognizing something, some power or desire in myself that I didn’t understand, or know how to feel about.”   
As a composer, I was immediately struck by the poem’s finely chiseled imagery, its rhythmic vitality, and its varied repetition of certain phrases.  Like many great poems, it was quite musical before a note of music was written.  I knew from the start that the last line, “for what I want,” would play a prominent role in the composition.  It is my hope that the young people singing the premiere of this work will want many things, and that much of what they dream will come true. I am grateful to Kristen Case for the opportunity to set her beautiful words to music.
